David Sacco, MDDavid Sacco, MD

David Sacco, MD, Medical Director for the Medical City Children’s Pediatric Neurosurgery Program, focuses on advanced pediatric neurosurgery.

Education:

  • Loyola University, Chicago; medical degree, with honors
  • University of Kentucky; general surgical internship and neurosurgical residency
  • Children’s Hospital Boston/Harvard Medical School’s prestigious pediatric neurosurgery fellowship

Dr. Sacco has practiced pediatric neurosurgery in Texas and Arizona, and is board certified in Neurological Surgery and Pediatric Neurological Surgery. He is also a member of the American Society of Pediatric Neurosurgeons and has published peer-reviewed articles, book chapters and spoken at national meetings on topics including hydrocephalus, endoscopy, Chiari malformations, spinal instrumentation, brain and skull tumors, craniosynostosis and spasticity.

At Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas, he works closely with other pediatric specialists to provide comprehensive pediatric care. His goal is to provide technical expertise and a personal approach to develop an individualized treatment plan for each patient.

Michael Sawvel, DOMichael Sawvel, DO

Michael Sawvel, DO, is well versed in the diagnosis and treatment of pediatric neurosurgical conditions including: brain tumors, congenital malformations, spina bifida, craniofacial disorders, surgical treatment of epilepsy, vascular malformations, Moya Moya, tethered spinal cord, Chiari malformations, spinal cord tumors, hydrocephalus and spinal instrumentation. He has written and presented on multiple topics specific to pediatric neurosurgery including trauma, brain tumors and hydrocephalus. Nationally, he is a member of the American College of Osteopathic Surgeons and American College of Osteopathic Neurosurgeons. He is looking forward to providing compassionate, patient-centered neurosurgical care to the Dallas/Fort Worth community.

Dr. Sawvel grew up in Northwest Ohio and attended college at Indiana Wesleyan University where he majored in Biology and Chemistry. He received his doctorate with honors from Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine. While completing neurosurgical training at Virginia Tech Carillion School of Medicine, his interest in pediatric neurosurgery was fostered. During training he also spent additional elective time in pediatric neurosurgery and Cincinnati Children's Hospital. He further developed knowledge and skills specific to pediatric neurosurgical conditions by completing a fellowship at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Emory University in Atlanta, GA.

Child Life Services

At Medical City Children’s Hospital, Certified Child Life Specialists help children and families adjust to the hospital setting. Child Life Specialists are experts in child development who promote effective coping through play, preparation, education and self-expression activities. Child Life Services helps children and their families prepare for hospitalization and surgery with the goal of keeping life as ordinary as possible.
