Nationally Recognized for Excellence in Nursing

Among our most important team members are our nurses. All are specially trained in pediatrics and have completed training through the Association of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Nurses (APHON). Many of our nurses have also achieved national certification in pediatric oncology through the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC). Several have received first-place recognition for innovative clinical practice and educational presentations at the national level.

Currently, Medical City Children’s Hospital pediatric hematology and oncology clinical nurse specialist Deb Echtenkamp, RN, MSN, CPON, serves as the President-Elect of APHON. Echtenkamp says her role is to “help direct the passion and fervor that APHON members share in our commitment to compel excellence and success in both practice and patient outcomes.”

But more than being uniquely qualified, they’re dedicated to going the extra mile to make sure children get the best treatment possible. In fact, Medical City Children’s Hospital was the first hospital in north Texas to receive Magnet recognition from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) for excellence in nursing care. We find that our patients are more comfortable when their nurses and doctors know them by name, so we have nurse/patient ratios that allow us to provide individualized care. Many kids and families keep in touch with us long after their treatment needs have been met.
